What it is
Kisspeptin is a peptide made in the hypothalamus, a control center deep in the brain. It triggers the release of GnRH, the hormone that sets off the chain leading to testosterone and estrogen.
Kisspeptin was discovered in cancer research in the 1990s and named after Hershey's Kisses, since the work was done in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Its role in reproduction was found later, when researchers realized that people who could not respond to it did not go through puberty. That made it clear it sits at the very top of the chain.
It is used in fertility research, including as a gentler alternative to standard triggers in IVF. It has not been approved as a medicine.

Reproductive hormones run down a chain. The hypothalamus releases GnRH, the pituitary gland responds with LH and FSH, and those tell the testicles or ovaries to make testosterone or estrogen.

Kisspeptin sits above all of that. It is the signal that tells the hypothalamus to release GnRH in the first place, and it sets the rhythm of those pulses.

Because it works at the top, it prompts the body's own production rather than replacing any hormone. Everything downstream keeps its normal feedback.
